Cyber crime is a real and growing threat to business. In Detica’s report, “The cost of cyber crime”, published jointly with the UK Cabinet Office, we estimated that cyber crime costs the UK economy alone some £27 billion per annum. Approximately £17 billion of this is due to what we might loosely term ‘cyber espionage’ – mostly the theft of intellectual property or sensitive commercial information.
Every business needs to look at their particular circumstances and evaluate how significant the risk of data loss or theft is for them, based on vulnerability and threat intelligence. Against this assessment, they will then be better placed to understand where investment is needed to mitigate risks, develop a business case to support it, and ultimately build and manage appropriate defenses.
